Drug Crime Defense Solutions
In Illinois, there is no such thing as a minor drug crime. For a college student, any drug possession charge can result in loss of eligibility for grants and loans. It can also result in a permanent criminal record that can make it harder to find a job.
I am Barry M. Lewis, a criminal defense lawyer in Chicago. I represent people from all walks of life who are charged with drug crimes, from high school and college students, to professionals who have never had previous involvement with the criminal justice system, to people who have past convictions for drug trafficking. Whether you are seeking to keep your record as clean as possible for employment reasons or you want to avoid serious prison time, I offer a free initial telephone consultation to discuss your case.
I firmly believe that penalties for drug crimes are too harsh in our society, and I will do everything I can to minimize the consequences of your arrest. I handle all types of drug cases, including:
- Possession of marijuana, PCP, LSD, cocaine, crack, meth and heroin
- Possession of a drug such as OxyContin, oxycodone and Xanax without a prescription
- Possession with intent to distribute
- Drug trafficking
- Federal drug charges, including conspiracy
- Civil asset forfeiture
In addition to the usual defenses, such as suppression of evidence that has been seized illegally by police, I have successfully defended cases using a chemical defense and have employed the rare, but extremely effective “Are you a truthful person?” cross-examination.
My Personal Beliefs About Drug Charges
I believe that all drugs should be legalized and taxed. It bothers me that so many people are incarcerated for the possession and sale of drugs. Statistics vary, but in the United States, about 500,000 people die each year because of tobacco use and about 100,000 people die because of prescription drug use. About 10,000 people die each year in this country because of drug overdoses on illegal drugs. So why is that class of drugs singled out for prosecution?
